The town of Kearny was founded in 1958 by Kennecott Mining Company. The mine's operation had expanded so far, it was about to envelop the communities of Sonora, Ray, and Barcelona. Many of the residents of these small towns were miners with the company. To help the residents who were about to be displaced, Kennecott developed a planned community for them. Thus, the community of Kearny gradually came into being, officially incorporated in 1959.
Kennecott mining at Ray was then taken over by the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO), which is the current owner of operations and main employer to this day.
The town was named after General Stephen Watts Kearny. While passing through the area in 1846, leading 100 dragoons to California, Kearny set up camp near the Gila river at the base of the Pinal Mountains.
The architecture of the town boasts remnants of the past and the slower paced 'way of life' resonates with a certain nostalgia. Big cities may have a lot to offer, but some things, small towns do better. Kids play outside, neighbors' wave in passing, and most restaurants know your usual order by heart.
Amenities consist of a grocery store, credit union, convenience and hardware stores, salons, restaurants, bars, hotel, laundry mat, community park, pool, activity center, golf course, airport, little league field, livestock corrals, lake, campgrounds, RV parks, and plenty of desert for outdoor activities!
These trails are popular amongst outdoors enthusiasts for day or night rides with beautiful, one of a kind, scenic views.
Camping is available on a first come first serve basis at no cost.
